Holistic Weight Loss

If you knew your anxiety, stress, painful periods (or no period) were major contributors to why you are overweight, would you address them all?

Holistic weight loss is never just about weight loss. It is about all of the things that got you to the position that you are now in. The extra kilos are only one part of the picture preventing you from living a full and contented life.

They are all a part of the complex mixture of things that are going on in your body - many of which are making your body store fat.

As a practitioner I address them all because they are all a part of your makeup and in my mind it doesn't make sense to do it any other way. Sure, you can go on a short term diet and lose weight but you will eventually put it back on because the underlying drivers of the weight gain are still there. I'll give you an example.

You have PCOS and you have been told that you need to manage your weight because it helps you to have healthy periods (which can allow you to fall pregnant because you desperately want to have kids). But this causes you to be stressed (which raises your stress hormone, cortisol) because you have found losing weight in the past SO DIFFICULT. But the problem is, elevated cortisol lessens your body's ability to deal with sugar and helps to store it as fat - making it even harder to lose weight and worsening your PCOS. 

This is a classic example of how a one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss is not ideal. You need a set of tools UNIQUE TO YOU to deal with your weight long term. 

This is where holistic weight loss can be so useful. I look at WHY you are putting on weight, WHY it is not coming off, WHAT the drivers are to your weight gain and what the barriers are to weight loss. And we then make a plan that is right for you and your body. Yes it takes time. Yes it is a learning process. Yes it is worth it.
